Vivian genuinely cares about her fellow man and woman. She’s not just someone who writes about helping others and/or only goes out to volunteer once in a while, she does it regularly, and she uses social media to push content to make people aware of what is going on in the world, and even her looks to get people to come and participate in making a change.
I was fortunate enough to plan a shoot with Vivian then attend, participate in, and photograph a protest after. Our shoot took place at a bookstore that also deals in records, coffee, comics, pinball and even has a setup in back for live music. Shooting with Vivian was great - she’s intelligent, charismatic, quick-witted, and, believe it or not, she’s a big dork (and it’s awesome). During the shoot we were walking along the sidewalk and suddenly I heard my name being yelled from what sounded to be a familiar voice. I turned back, confused, and saw my mom a quarter-of-a-block back! Turned out she was eating with her husband at a restaurant as we walked by and she ran to say “hi!” A little odd at first, but I adore my mother, and seeing her and giving her a huge hug in the middle of the shoot was a pleasant surprise! Back to the shoot though.
We took pictures in an old film photo booth, with her reading books about strong women, holding fake flowers, posing to devour the record So Many Men, So Little Time, and in front of a chessboard next to an old hat, all while she posed in three beautiful dresses she looked stunning in.
After the shoot, I met a friend of hers and picked up someone she knew from the Colorado People’s Alliance for a rally outside the Aurora I.C.E. Detention Center where a relatively large group had come together to protest the conditions people detained there have said they face daily, and the fear of immediate reprisal upon speaking to anyone outside the facility of their experiences. That is a topic for another post, however.
At the end of the rally, just as the sun was fading from view behind the Rocky Mountains, I pulled Vivian to the side to capture one last photo (below), before racing to Torchy’s Tacos for tacos, margaritas and good conversation in celebration of a full day’s work!
Thank you, Vivian, for the experience. I’ll never forget it.
